Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones. Ciprofloxacin fights bacteria in the body.
Ciprofloxacin is used to treat different types of bacterial infections.
Ciprofloxacin may also be used for purposes other than those listed here.
What is the most important information I should know about ciprofloxacin?
Do not take ciprofloxacin with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice. You may eat or drink dairy products or calcium-fortified juice with a regular meal, but do not use them alone when taking ciprofloxacin. They could make the medication less effective.
Take all of the ciprofloxacin that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.
Drink several extra glasses of fluid every day while taking ciprofloxacin. If you drink dairy products (milk, yogurt) or calcium-fortified juice, drink them with a meal and not when you are taking your ciprofloxacin dose.
Certain medicines should be taken at least 2 hours after or 6 hours before you take ciprofloxacin.
Taking ciprofloxacin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid exposure to sunlight, sun lamps, or tanning beds.
What should I discuss with my doctor before taking ciprofloxacin?
Before taking ciprofloxacin, tell your doctor if you have:
a history of allergic reaction to an antibiotic;
joint problems;
kidney disease; or
epilepsy or seizures.
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use ciprofloxacin or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.
not use ciprofloxacin without telling your doctor if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How should I take ciprofloxacin?
Take ciprofloxacin exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take it in larger doses or for longer than recommended by your doctor.
Take each dose with a full glass of water (8 ounces). Drink several extra glasses of fluid each day while you are taking ciprofloxacin.
Do not crush, chew or break the extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Ciprofloxacin may be taken with or without food, but take it at the same time each day.
Take this medication for as many days as it has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Ciprofloxacin will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Store ciprofloxacin at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not allow the liquid medicine to freeze.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
Symptoms of a ciprofloxacin overdose may include seizures, urination problems, weakness, or blue lips with pale skin.
What should I avoid while taking ciprofloxacin?
Avoid caffeine while you are taking ciprofloxacin, because the medication can make the effects of caffeine stronger.
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, sunlamps, or tanning beds. Ciprofloxacin make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and a sunburn may result. Wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen if you must be out in the sun. Call your doctor if you have severe burning, redness, itching, rash, or swelling after being in the sun.
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.
Ciprofloxacin can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
What are the possible side effects of ciprofloxacin?
Stop using ciprofloxacin and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using ciprofloxacin and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
seizure (black-out or convulsions);
confusion, hallucinations, depression, or thoughts of hurting yourself or others;
sudden pain or swelling near your joints (especially in your arm or ankle);
nausea, stomach pain, low fever, lost appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
urinating more or less than usual;
numbness, tingling, or unusual pain anywhere in your body; or
chest pain, pounding or fast heartbeats.
Other less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as:
nausea, vomiting;
dizziness or drowsiness;
blurred vision;
sleep problems (insomnia);
joint stiffness or muscle pain; or
increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Can a huge dental abcess harm my unborn baby?
Im 14 weeks pregnant and had a rough pregnancy so far (high risk due to Extrachrionic Haemorrhage and 8 previous miscarriages) and ive been put on antibiotics (Amoxycillin 500mg) and have been on them for about 3 months due to a small abcess (was on the waiting list for a dentist) I have been allocated a dentist and went to see them last week where i got told (as i suspected) that i needed to have a tooth extracted, this should of been done tomorrow, However this morning i woke up this morning with a huge lump on the right hand side of my face (looks like im smuggling golf balls!!) the infection has clearly spread. I have been back to my dentist this morning who have said i need to have my gum slit to release the infection and still have the tooth extracted. Anyways my appointment isn't for another week and i was wondering if this is ok or will the infection spread and harm baby? I know this sounds silly to ask but i dont know if it can
Thanks people - The Amoxycillin has been prescribed by both my Doctor and Dentist. As for a Gynacologist though i dont have one. Am in UK and have a midwife who has said that the tablets are ok to take too
What will happen if i postpone my root canal?
I was experiencing a severe pain in my tooth and went to see a dentist. The dentist recommended me a root canal and gave me some pain killers and Amoxycillin capsules 500mg. But I want to do the root canal in my home town in two months. What are the consequences of postponing the root canal treatment? Thanks.
Is there no problem taking amoxycillin 500mg while taking anti-hypertension drugs?
I am currently on medication to lower my blood pressure. I am taking losartan, atenolol and aspirin. Just recently, I have problem with my upper teeth (molar) and was given amoxycillin to stop the infection. I am working in the middle of the desert and what we have in the field is just a small clinic for emergency purposes only. Thanks.
First Time Taking LSA Risks, And Suggestions?
I really, really wanna try doing Hawaiin Baby Woodrose seeds (which has LSA in it) when going to Alice In Wonderland this next Friday.
I've never done any drugs outside of cannabis and alcohol (yeah I know, I'm a pussy) so this would be my first psychedelic experience. I just wanna now if I should try something else first, or if it's weak enough for a first timer to try. I know that you're supposed to take them slowly, or else you get a bad trip, and I've done a bit of digging on the internet to try to find out as much as I can. What I want to know is if it's possible to wash off pesticides, say if I decided to buy the seeds from Wal-Mart or a seed shop, where it's non-organic, or if I should just go the safe way and go with organic seeds, so that I don't end up in the hospital or something. I need to know this pretty soon here, because I need to know if I have to order some online or not and have them shipped here before Friday.
Do you feel you slowly go crazy living by yourself?
I have had 2 apartments so far in my life and I am only 21. It was nice living by myself but I felt I was slowly going crazy. I would rather have a roommate to keep me company but my friends in school were losers, huge pot heads that would rather buy drugs and live at home then try to make it in the world. I found a place that is targeted towards college kids where 4 people pay $400 a month for a 4 bed room furnished apartment. The bedrooms are small but the same size as my room at home, all I need to do there is sleep and study. They have a large living room and kitchen with 2 bathrooms. All my friends with apartments already say don't do it. I can live by myself with privacy for $400 a month plus utilities, at the place by school its $400 for everything. Is it bad that I don't care about privacy and would rather live with a group of people.
would you read my book??
i am thirteen but i do have plenty of curse words so... yeah. leave comments..
its called Decisions to Make
have you ever had a family that didnt want you? well right now my dad could care less if i lived today or died. my mom was too scared of my dad -on steroids and who knows how many other drugs- to do sh*t. you only want to go to schoolbecause you get away from your family. but then you realise people are starting rumors about you. Then waht you thought was a peaceful getawat only turns into a bigger hell than at home.Then someone you REALLY like asked you out. ofcorse you say yes then three weeks later he brakes up with you, and school only becomes a bigger pain in the ass.who am i? my names elizabeth walker. my friends just call me liz or lizzy.i am 21 years old.My mother died when i was 14. She drowned in a river near my grandma rozas gouse. after that i lived in foster homes because when we called the cops they examined my father and found serious drugs in his system such as cocaine weed and many other drugs then they took him to jail. so yeah i was living with fat families thin families big families small families sane families and crazy families. so my dating life was a living hell and my sex life didnt exist. even though my mom died i kept my promise"you can either stay a virgin until your married or moved out"she once said. "pinky swear mommy"i said, then we went to bed. that was my first talk about sex and i was only nine. But oh well. it made me smarter. She once told me that a guy would say anything to get you in bed. So when a guy told me he loved me i told him i wasnt sleeping with him. they`d try the next day i said no and they dumped me. on my 18th birthdaymy gramdma bought me a house in paris, close to hers. i got a boyfriend and an extremely handsome one at that. he was 17 and in colleage which was weird at the time but i overlooked it. one day we were talking "liz, we need somewhere else to live. maybe somewhere closer to school?" Justin said and thats all i got so far. not really but im getting tired so thats where im stopping. lol sorry.
